Perfect Game has released its official All-Tournament Team from the 2012 Perfect Game/Evoshield National Championship (Upperclass), which was held Sept. 14-17 at Camelback Ranch and Goodyear Ballpark in Phoenix, Ariz. The players selected were based on first-hand observations as well as statistical data compiled using GameChanger, the official scoring application of Perfect Game and the WWBA.

GAME #1 (9/14/2012 10:44:58 PM): San Diego Gamers (6) – AZ Pro (1)

Ahearn Strikes Out 14 in San Diego Gamers Victory
RHP/OF Taylor Ahearn (2013, St. Augustine HS, CA) struck out 13 hitters without allowing a walk in a complete game 6-1 win over AZ Pro 17U Friday evening at the Reds Complex.  The 6-1/180 Ahearn, who also batted cleanup for the Gamers and went 2-3 with a double and 2 Rbi’s, allowed only 3 hits and all 21 of his outs were recorded either by strikeout or by ground balls.  He needed only 93 pitches, 66 of which were for strikes.  He pitched in the 83-86 mph range with his fastball, with a 69-72 mph curveball and a 74 mph change up.The Gamers collected 12 hits on the day, including 3 apiece from the first two hitters in the line up, SS Nico Maida (2013, Grossmont HS, CA) and C Joe Stefanki (2012, San Dieguito HS, CA).  But the most important hit came from C Chris Hudgins (2014, Dahalla HS, CA), who crushed a bases loaded triple in the first inning to give the Gamers an immediate and early lead.

GAME #4 (9/18/2012 11:46:42 AM): San Diego Gamers (2) – Mad Dogs Baseball Club (1)

Late inning hit leads Gamers to win
Timely hitting helped San Diego Gamers defeat Mad Dogs Baseball Club 2-1 on Sunday. With the game tied in the bottom of the sixth, Pablo O’Connor (2013, Monte Vista HS, CA) crushed a two-out triple to right field. Teammate Lucas McDowell (2013, San Dieguito HS, CA) drove him in with the game-winning hit, a single to right. Nicholas Maida (2013, Grossmont HS, CA) contributed two hits and a stolen bases from the leadoff spot.RHP Andrew Schultz (2013, Patrick Henry HS, CA) struck out four in three innings for the Gamers. He showed a quick arm, firing strikes at 82-84 mph. He maintained arm speed when throwing mid-70s straight-changeup.

GAME #3 (7/7/2012 2:01:47 PM): ABD Rookies (6) – Dayton Dodgers (0)

ABD Rookies put the game away in the sixth with four runs and defeated the Dayton Dodgers 6-0.

Tyler Burdett (2013, Sierra Vista HS, Las Vegas, NV) tossed a complete game for ABD. Burdett allowed no runs on three hits. The RHP had a balanced, online delivery and was around the plate with all pitches as he struck out 10. His fastball ranged between 79-83mph.

Nico Maida (2013, Grossmont HS, San Diego, CA), Chris Lowe (2014, Poway HS, San Diego, CA), & Drew Davis (2013, Rancho Bernardo HS, San Diego, CA) all batted 2-4 for the Rookies.

Each had one double and Maida & Lowe both had 2 RBI while Davis drove in one run.

Maida was an aggressive hitter and showed power potential at the plate.

Lowe scored one run as well and Davis showed the bat is his best tool.

GAME #4 (7/8/2012 11:29:20 AM): ABD Rookies 6 – Dayton Dodgers 0

The ABD Rookies won again by beating the East Cobb Padres 17u 6-2.

The Rookies had a 5 run 4th inning that carried them to the win. The Rookies had 9 hits in the game by 8 different players.

Nico Maida (2013, Grossmont, CA) was 2-4 with a run scored. Chris Lowe (2014, Poway, CA) had a double and drove in 3 runs for the Rookies as well.

Corey Wernerth (2014, Poway, CA) went the distance on the mound for the Rookies. Wenerth threw 7 innings and gave up 1 earned run on 5 hits. He struck out 9 and walked 2.

The Padres were led at the plate by Kyle Gaddis (2013, Hiram, GA). Gaddis was 2-3 with a run scored in the game. Cody Long (2013, West Forsyth, GA) threw 2 innings of shutdown relief for the Padres. Long did not allow a hit and struck out 1 during his time on the mound.

GAME #6 (7/10/2012 12:00:20 PM): ABD Rookies 3 – Columbia Angles 6

Travis Jones (2014, Atascocita, TX) had a good game today for the Columbia Angels 17u team as they defeated the ABD Rookies 6-3 today.

Jones was 3-4 at the plate with one RBI. Jones made the game look easy using his quick bat and excellent bat speed to rip the ball into the gap and get a double. He was a polished hitter producing for his team out of the two hole. He also was a solid runner showing good instincts on the bases as he stole one base.

Nico Maida (2013, Grossmont, CA) had a good game out of the lead off spot for the ABD Rookies. Maida was 1-3 in the game with one RBI. Maida showed a quick bat and short compact swing helping him get around on pitches. He also showed patience at the plate as he drew one walk in the game. Maida stole two bases in the game [including home] and scored two runs as he was disruptive for the Columbia Angels on the bases.

Alex Shick (2014, Cathedral Catholic, CA) had a good performance on the mound for the Rookies throwing five innings allowing two earned runs off of three hits. Shick used his lower half well and had sound mechanics. He threw 84-87 with his heater that showed good life. He also threw a good slider with tight rotation. Shick had good command throwing all of his pitches around the plate and for strikes. He struck out six batters in the game and walked only two.

Scouting Reports

Nico Maida is a 2013 MIF/OF with a 5-7 160 lb. frame from San Diego, CA who attends Grossmont. Maida has a medium sized frame with a compact build. He has a good hands and quick transfers defensively with a quick release. Maida has smooth actions and his feet work well on the infield. He has developing arm strength with good defensive tools. At the plate, Maida starts with a square stance and uses a leg lift trigger to start his swing. He made consistent hard line drive contact and generates good bat speed. He uses a middle of the field approach and uses his hands well in his swing. Maida showed good instincts on the base paths and defensively. Excellent student.
